NMR Interpretation Module

PetrophysicsDecember 18, 2025

Purpose

The NMR interpretation module allows users to calculate porosity, bound and free fluids from the measure T1 and T2 distributions from NMR tools.

Primary Outputs

Curve NameDescription
PHIT_NMRTotal porosity from NMR
TOTAL_BOUND_FLUID_VOLUMETotal bound fluid volume
CLAY_BOUND_WATER_VOLUMEClay bound water volume
SWIRR_NMRIrredducible Sw from NMR
PERM_COATES_NMRPermeability from NMR using Coates method

Discussion

In oil and gas well logging, the $T_2$ distribution is used as a high-resolution "map" of the formation's pore system. While a standard porosity tool tells you how much fluid is there, NMR tells you where that fluid is trapped and whether it will flow.

The raw data is converted into a T2 distribution (a plot of amplitude vs. relaxation time).

  • Small pores (high surface-to-volume ratio) cause fast relaxation.
  • Large pores (low surface-to-volume ratio) cause slow relaxation.

Petrophysicists use "cutoffs" to divide the total porosity into functional components. These values vary by lithology:

ComponentClasticsCarbonatesInterpretation
Clay Bound Water< 3msVariableWater chemically bound to clays; non-producible.
Bulk Volume Irreducible3-33ms3-90msCapillary-bound water; held by surface tension; non-producible.
Free Fluid> 33ms> 90ms"Free Fluid Index"; the oil, gas, or water that can actually flow.

Quick Start Module

Purpose The Quick Start module is designed to help users quickly set dozens of common parameters by selecting a handful of basic options from dropdown menus. Parameters There are three parameters that are set on a zone-by-zone basis and two parameters that are set on a full-well basis. These are as follows. Discussion The parameters are linked to what are called named_defaults in the software. These are collections of defaults that can be set through assigning a single parameter.

Making Log Calculations in a Flow

This articles provides an overview of how to use a Flow to before basic log calculations. To do this, the following Flow tools are used: LogInput >> Bring the log data into the Flow LogMath >> Perform some calculation LogOutput >> Writes the log data to a new log database. There can be as many LogMath tools added to a flow as one would like, and they can be added to existing Flows ushc as a Log Clean-up Flow. The LogMath tool is extremely flexible.
