Petrophysics: New Projects & Set-up

PetrophysicsJuly 30, 2025

To create a new petrophysical interpretation in Danomics, please see the instructions in the video below:

Instructions

  1. To start a new project go to File>>New Petrophysical Calculation
  2. Enter in a name for your project and click “OK”. After clicking “OK” you will now have a new, empty project.
  3. On the top right-hand side of the screen you should see an area labeled “Database”. Below this are drop-down selection boxes. Choose your well header, well tops, and well log databases. Core and raster data can also be selected here.
  4. Choose your key well (see section on Key well selection below)

Key well selection

One of the most important decisions is what well you want to use as your key well. The methods and parameters you apply to this well will be applied to all other wells in the project. Typically you would want to select a well that has a complete suite of well logs, covers all of the zones of interest, and hopefully has core data.

The methods you choose for this well (e.g., Vclay, porosity, and saturation methods) will be used for other wells.

To set your key well go to the pane where you earlier selected your databases. Beneath this you will find a box named “Key well API:” Enter in the UWI/API number of your key well. In the example below the well 42051304970000 has been selected.

Once you have selected your key well you should save your project.

Hints & Tips

  • If your data doesn't show up, check to see if the API numbers from the well headers and well logs match.
  • If they do, expand the filters are and check that you haven't accidentally filtered out all of the data.
  • See the Welcome Project Tutorial for a complete example.

DCA: Type well curves

In this video I demonstrate how to generate a well set filtered by a number of criteria and generate a multi-well type curve. Before starting this video you should already know how to load your data and create a DCA project. If not, please review those videos. Type well curves are generated by creating a decline that represents data from multiple wells.

DCA: Loading Production data

In this video I demonstrate how to load production and well header data for use in a decline curve analysis project. The first step is to gather your data. You’ll need: Production data – this can be in CSV, Excel, or IHS 298 formats. For spreadsheet formats you’ll need columns for API, Date, Oil, Gas, Water (optional), and days of production for that period (optional). Well header data – this can be in CSV, Excel, or IHS 297 formats.
